Teast of Honor
Food Wars Diner | Cook Book

“This restaurant is owned and operated by a husband and wife, named Chris and Dawn, and was named in honor of the husband’s father. The food is based on his father’s recipes: he and his six siblings made their dad a cookbook decades ago and they called it “John’s Poison”. John served in the military and fought in World War II in France and Germany. When his two sons went off to college, they attended The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. In 1995, John died of a heart attack. His second son later built this restaurant in honor of his father, in his childhood hometown, New Providence, NJ. The town is a small little suburb near Summit, N.J. In New Providence, there is an American Legion hall. The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919, as a patriotic veteran’s organization, devoted to mutual helpfulness.” (The bio for the diner and the owners.)

The cookbook is a modern, clean design with a kid friendly, family feel. The first few pages talk about the restaurant and the owners, along with information about the head chef. There are multiple different family recipes with a list of the ingredients, step by step instructions, and interesting footnotes. On the other side of the recipe pages there are interesting facts about all the different branches of the military. Each of these pages have food images, vector images for the restaurant and owners, and illustrations that relate to the military.

For the menu of the diner, it is a traditional wood block menu that gives it a little flare. Similar to the black and white wood block quotes, military quotes and mottos were added to the backs of the wood blocks, to make them more personal. On both menus, there are two star designs next to the menu names and the color alternates from red to blue as the names descend. On the drink menu, there are three menu pages: Cocktails, Beer, and Wine, and in the middle of each menu is a silhouette of a drink into the background. Finally, on the food menu, there are small illustrations of some of the foods on the menu.
