Project | 10 Lego Ninjago Poster

For this project, I was required to find a cartoon clip and create a poster using the lines from the clip. The scene I chose is from the LEGO Ninjagotelevision series. The cartoon is about four ninjas named Zane, Jay, Cole, and Kai. The scene I chose was of Zane revealing that he has discovered that he is a robot. I chose this scene because I wanted to experiment with the typefaces using the characters’ mixed emotions.

Then I created a geometric patterned grid and a type layout where I altered the scale, of certain words and letters, and mixed type family members. I italicized some words to express the feeling of worry or confusion. I also made certain words bold or larger; to give emphasis to what the ninjas were saying. Then I chose the typefaces based on the personalities of the characters. The serif typefaces are for Zane and Jay because they are smart, the san serif fonts for Cole and Kai because of their serious attitudes, and the Georgia font for the title. As for the colors, I chose them based off the suit color each ninja wore in the cartoon and used a black background. My professor suggested that I should go back through and experiment a bit more, to go outside the grid. First, I tightened the spacing between some of the lines and moved some of them around to make it easier to read. Then I moved, overlapped, rotated, and changed the sizes of some of the letters and words to better express the mixed emotions in the scene.
